The battle in the high-specs low-cost smartphones niche is getting really tough. Seems that Asus is willing to join the competition and announced its own cheap smartphone with great specifications. As we all know Xiaomi’s Redmi 1S fully dominates at the moment, but we are about to see a great battle. Meizu should release K52, Lenovo showed K3, Xiaomi is preparing Redmi 2 and now Asus trows one unit on the battlefield. It’s called Asus Pegasus X002 and it definitely will make the competition more interesting. Although the name sounds glorious, don’t expect more than a mid-ranger, but with low price. Actually one interesting fact is that the Asus itself is named after the greek mythological creatures Pegasus. But let’s move to the phone’s specifications.
Asus Pegasus will be device with a 5-inches HD resolution display (1280×720 pixels). The phone will be powered by 64-bit MTK processor. It’s the new one MT6732, which is clocked at 1.5GHz. The Asus Pegasus will be paired with generous 2GB RAM memory and 16GB internal storage, which can be expanded with microSD card, so seems that you’ll not run out of storage easily.
There will be two cameras – the back one will be 8MP one and the front one will be 5MP. Asus will try again to impress us with some camera tweaks. It’s rumored that the back camera will come with ultra-picture quality mode, which will be able to synthesize several pictures together and form one ultra-high resolution 30MP image.
One 2500 mAh battery will power the Asus Pegasus and should be enough for at least one day (even with heavy use, at least on theory). The handset will run on Android 4.4 with ASUS’ own Zen UI on top. The Pegasus should work with 3G and 4G, however by the current moment there’s only information that the supported frequencies will be for China. This means that can use it only for 2G (if you buy it). There’s still no word for an international version with different frequencies. Of course ASUS Pegasus will support dual sim, because it’s a popular feature for the Chinese market.
The pre-sell already started and the price is around $129, which is pretty good for these features (considering the powerful processor and the generous amount of RAM memory and on-board storage).
Will see, if the handset will be able to stand against Xiaomi and the other upcoming killer-specs budget devices.
